Adversity often stands as a formidable opponent in the pursuit of dreams. Yet, it is precisely in those challenging moments that the resilience of the human spirit is most inspiring. At the Ajmal Samuel Foundation (ASF), we understand empowerment's impact on individuals, especially those facing disabilities or economic difficulties. Our mission extends beyond mere assistance to fueling aspirations and offering experiences that once seemed unattainable. This is the story of Ihtisham Ali, whose journey embodies strength in adversity.
The Vision of ASF
In 2022, we launched a program through the ASF to equip disabled individuals with sports equipment they once couldn't imagine using. This initiative is deeply personal, reflecting my journey from obscurity in Hong Kong to becoming a self-made businessman and a national-level athlete driven by perseverance and hard work. The values ingrained in me from childhood by my family and my military background motivate me to share these experiences with others. This personal connection, this deep-rooted belief in the transformative power of perseverance, fuels our mission and enhances its impact.
Through various social media channels, I've shared numerous stories of determination. However, today, I want to highlight the story of Ihtisham Ali—a narrative that goes beyond borders and resonates deeply with anyone who values resilience. His story is not just about overcoming physical challenges; it celebrates the determined human spirit that refuses to be defeated by circumstances.
Meeting Ihtisham Ali
Our paths crossed on social media, specifically within hand-cycling groups, where I frequently noticed Ihtisham posting questions and expressing an interest in hand-cycling. His dedication never wavered despite being based in Pakistan and lacking the resources to pursue this passion. He shared that he once used a three-wheeled mobility aid for a remarkable journey from Gujranwala to Karachi—roughly 1,200 kilometres. His journey is a testament to the transformative power of perseverance and its impact on one's life.
Intrigued by his story of perseverance against all odds, I began investigating his background. It became clear that Ihtisham came from humble beginnings. He became wheelchair-bound during his childhood due to polio. His father ran a small grocery shop while he worked as a clerk at a local property company. After sending a friend to meet him in Pakistan, I was convinced that Ihtisham deserved an opportunity to fulfil his dream of hand-cycling.
A Dream Realized
ASF decided that Ihtisham would receive our first hand-cycle. This opportunity also included an unexpected challenge: a trip to Singapore, a place he had never visited. It was here that his dream would come to life.
In collaboration with the Para Cycling Federation of Singapore, we organised a one-day event in July 2023 featuring a 100-kilometer challenge. I joined him on this challenge, riding alongside Ihtisham on his new handbike. His confidence was evident as he eagerly awaited the event. He completed 60 km of the total 100 km, exceeding my expectations, especially considering he had no prior training. He earned the handbike and could take a brand-new one back to Pakistan.
The idea is for him to train himself and spread the message of inclusivity in sports across Pakistan. He has done a remarkable job; we are very proud of him. Here are some of the events he has participated in since taking the handbike back to Pakistan:

The Power of Adversity
Ihtisham's story is a testament to the incredible strength found in adversity. His determination to pursue hand-cycling despite financial limitations and geographical barriers is remarkable. He reminds us that even in the face of challenges, dreams are worth pursuing, and the resilience of the human spirit can overcome the most formidable obstacles.
Through this journey, I hope to inspire others like Ihtisham. As we continue our work with the ASF, we aim to empower more individuals by giving them opportunities to rise above their constraints and embrace their passions, whether in sports or business.
