RTHK HONG KONG STORIES: A WARRIOR OF LIFE FROM PAKISTAN
In 1987, a young officer in the Pakistani army, still in his early twenties, was travelling down a steep mountain road in Kashmir when his jeep went over the edge and into a ravine. The driver was killed. Ajmal survived, but he would never walk again. In this episode of Hong Kong Stories: Connected with Hong Kong, Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) tells the story of what came next.
From treatment in the United Kingdom and recovery in Germany to a summer visit to Hong Kong that became a lifetime, the programme follows Ajmal through two and a half years of looking for work in the Hong Kong of the 1990s, the discrimination he faced as a wheelchair user, and the online payments business he went on to build.
It also shows how sport replaced morphine as his answer to chronic pain: rowing for Hong Kong at the Asian Games and other international events, long-distance hand-cycling to raise funds for others, and his dream of flying solo as a paraglider.
