If life’s evolution had a quick highlight reel for me, it might look something like this: first, I mastered walking, then I transitioned to wheels when life demanded it, and now, against all odds, I’m soaring on wings in the air. Call it a personal Darwinian twist, survival of the most determined, or perhaps the most creatively adaptive.
Yesterday marked a milestone in a journey that has been both deeply personal and universally inspiring: the premiere of “Pendulum Control,” a documentary that chronicles my path to becoming a certified adaptive paragliding pilot. This film is more than an adventure; it is a testament to resilience, the power of mindset, and the rewriting of what is possible in the face of adversity.
From the moment my life changed in that vehicle accident back in 1987, the narrative seemed written for me, a story capped by limitations. Yet, every challenge since then has been a page in a different book, one where the wounds are the places where light enters. Becoming an adaptive paraglider was not simply about flying; it was about reclaiming the sky and redefining the boundaries imposed not just by the world, but sometimes by ourselves.
“Pendulum Control” captures the essence of this transformation. Under the skilled guidance of Matthew Van Zyl, an experienced flight instructor who had never taught a pilot with my condition, I relearned the fundamentals, not just of paragliding, but of trust, patience, and mental toughness. There were moments of doubt, moments that tested every fibre of resolve, yet those were precisely the moments where actual progress was forged. The film’s narrative of overcoming oscillation, the pendulum effect, and mastering control mirrors the greater journey of mastering life.
This story is not mine alone. It is the story of a community: a vibrant paragliding family in South Africa — steadfast in their support, and the broader rise of adaptive sports as a force for inclusion and empowerment. By soaring above hills and oceans, we are sending a message: disability does not define ability. With persistence and the right mindset, every limit can be challenged, and every stigma can be confronted.
Behind every frame of “Pendulum Control” is a collaboration with the talented Richard Mark Dobson, whose lens reveals the beauty, danger, and grace of this pursuit. Documenting this journey was a mission to shine a light on a narrative often left in the shadows. To show that with spirit, determination, and community, what was once impossible becomes a horizon waiting to be reached.
We are excited to soon host screenings of "Pendulum Control" in collaboration with various organisations and communities. We warmly welcome partnerships that will bring this inspiring story to a broader audience. The documentary will be publicly available on online platforms during the fourth quarter. In the meantime, please watch the trailer and related videos, and reach out if you would like to screen the film for your community or team. Join this journey, not just as spectators, but as active participants in a mindset that transforms lives. Together, we rise above storms, see challenges as opportunities, and embrace the boundless power of the human spirit.
Because beyond limits, beyond borders, every challenge becomes an opportunity. And in every fall, there is a rise, higher and stronger.
