This blog post is a story of two journeys: one physical and one creative. It's about pushing boundaries, challenging perceptions, and finding beauty in the unexpected. It's about the power of photography to amplify voices and celebrate the human spirit, especially within marginalised communities.
Last year, I embarked on a challenging yet rewarding adventure: a hand-cycling journey through the stunning landscapes of the Baltics and Scandinavia. It was a journey of self-discovery, a test of physical and mental endurance, and a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome obstacles.
This year, a different kind of journey is about to begin. Our trusted photographer, Richard, is retracing my footsteps, capturing the essence of the region through his camera's lens. But this isn't just a simple "re-do" of last year's trip. It's a creative collaboration, a deeper exploration of the themes that resonated with us both.
A Book in the Making
We're working on a book, a visual narrative that will share the stories and emotions of the journey. It's a project close to our hearts, a collaboration that has taken on a life of its own.
We've been incredibly fortunate to have Charlotte Cotton, a leading figure in the world of photography, onboard as curator. Charlotte's expertise and passion for the medium have added a profound depth to the project, helping us to shape the narrative and elevate the impact of the imagery.
Charlotte's Vision: Amplifying Voices
Charlotte's vision for the book is clear: to celebrate the journey of independence and visibility, especially within disabled communities.
She's been instrumental in shaping the project's direction, highlighting the importance of portraying "environmental portraits" that showcase the people we met along the way. These portraits, she believes, are crucial for showcasing the beauty and resilience of these communities and for challenging the often-invisible nature of their experiences.
As Charlotte puts it, "There's a portrait of a man in a wheelchair that I felt I would like many many more of, which for me represent the way in which photography is a tool for "being seen", which is such a massive issue within disenfranchised and ignored communities, including within disabled communities. I feel like so much of the message of this project is about a journey of independence and visibility and portraits that amplify that by acknowledging and representing communities that support independent living for disabled people, which is so crucial to have."
Richard's Return: A Journey of Discovery
Armed with his camera and a sense of adventure, Richard is embarking on a new adventure this year. He'll travel by e-bike, exploring the landscapes and meeting the people who captured his heart on the previous trip. His journey is not just about taking pictures but about capturing the spirit of the journey, the essence of the people, and the stories that unfold along the way.
While Richard embraces the freedom of an open itinerary, he's also mindful of Charlotte's vision for the project. His goal is to create a collection of beautiful and powerful images that resonate with the message of independence, visibility, and resilience.
The Power of Photography: More Than Just Pictures
This project is more than just a book of beautiful photographs. It's a testament to photography's power to amplify voices, challenge perceptions, and inspire change. It's a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit and a celebration of the beauty and diversity of the human experience.
Through this project, we believe we can highlight the often-overlooked stories of those striving for independence and recognition. We hope to inspire others to challenge their perceptions and celebrate all humanity's diversity and beauty.
The Journey Continues
Richard's journey is just beginning, and we're eager to follow his progress. We'll share updates on our blog, offering glimpses into his experiences and the powerful images he's capturing.
This is a story of adventure, collaboration, and artistic vision. It celebrates the beauty of the human spirit and the power of art to change the world.
Stay tuned for more!
